Why Real Madrid Have 'Total Confidence' in Teenager Thiago Pitarch

The teenager has featured in seven games for Real Madrid, including five appearances in the starting lineup.

Whenever a teenage makes club a historic moment in a key Champions League match against Manchester City, it naturally attracts acclaim and the spotlight.

In only his first start in the competition - and fifth game for the club - the young midfielder made a strong impression as the fifteen-time Champions League winners secured a 3-0 last-16 first leg advantage at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The young player, who also had his Real debut in the play-off round a month ago with a substitute appearance at Sporting Lisbon, then helped Los Blancos overcome the English champions in the midweek return to confirm a quarter-final berth.

Aged 18 years old, the midfielder became the team's youngest player to start twice in the Champions League's latter rounds, surpassing star Vinicius Jr's record by a week and a half.

Rapid Ascent Through The Academy

The midfielder is the latest to come through from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most exciting protegees.

He signed for Real from Leganes in 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico and Getafe academies, and starting out for the Juvenil C team, where he quickly made a strong impression.

Pitarch progressed to the B team and it was in a pre-season game in which they played against the academy's first team, then managed by the former defender, where the teenager is said to have drawn the eye of the present manager, who replaced the previous coach in January.

Reports would later label the moment as "love at first sight," adding Pitarch stood out not only for his skill on the ball, but for the vitality, character and determination he brought to the team.

'His Greatest Quality Is His Personality'

In the summer of 2025, ex-manager Alonso called up the youngster to train with the first team and gave him minutes in pre-season.

However, it was the change in manager that became the turning point in his career as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in both ties against the Portuguese side that led to the meeting with Manchester City.

"I have dreamed of this every night when sleeping, the very first time I started playing the game, each day you head to training and each day you have a game," stated the player after his first appearance.

"I've just achieved my dream with the greatest club in the world and in the top tournament."

Given a starting debut in La Liga against his former club - where he was for several seasons after moving from Atleti in 2018 - he has kept his spot for the next four as fitness issues to Bellingham and Ceballos provided an opportunity.

The teenager has seized it with performances that have defied his age and inexperience.

"He's a very quick footballer, and you can observe what he's capable of," said Arbeloa. "He is extremely energetic, with excellent stamina, effort and mobility."

Pitarch's mentality has also impressed his coach.

"His standout trait is his character," continued Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the possession, and when pressed, he doesn't feel it.

"I understand people are astonished to watch him make his debut in a Champions League match, but he's playing because I had complete confidence in him to do his normal game.

"He will continue to get opportunities with the first team. It's a pleasure to have a talent like him."

Spain or Morocco?

Born in Fuenlabrada, in the Spanish capital's community, and was raised deeply involved in Spanish football, progressing through local academies before joining the club's renowned La Fabrica system.

He holds dual Spanish and Moroccan nationality, offering him the option to represent both nations at senior international level.

According to international regulations, players may appear for multiple nations at youth level without being permanently tied, with the final decision only binding once they play in a official full international.

He has featured for the Spanish national team at youth level, turning out for both the under-19 and U20 sides, and participated in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where La Roja reached the last eight.

Nevertheless, he has yet to commit to any senior national team, who are watching his progress with keen attention.

In a recent interview, the player confirmed: "I haven't made my final decision yet. Things are positive with the Spanish federation, but I will reach a decision in the near future."

His situation mirrors that of other bi-national talents such as Real team-mate Brahim Diaz and Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal. While 18-year-old Lamine chose La Roja, Brahim opted to play for Morocco.

Focus on the Future

For now, his attention is on making his mark in the Madrid lineup and repaying his manager's belief.

He played over an hour in the 2-1 win at City, which completed a 5-1 aggregate success and a quarter-final tie with Bayern Munich.

His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Manuel Angel underscored Arbeloa's trust in younger players to help the team pursue trophies to come.

Following his notable contributions so far on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is tipped to play a key role in that.

"Arbeloa treats me the same. We deal with it very normally. I attempt not to think about it too much - I must deserve my playing time on the field," he commented after the success at Manchester.
