This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

Consider this a challenge for partners in committed relationships who are fans of the horror genre: Get comfortable with your significant other and stream Together. This independent film success of 2025 has now made its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. Outwardly, it might appear like standard body horror, but beneath Together exists a deep examination about the ways we decide to love our partners.

A Directorial Debut Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together is the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for over ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, the two stars bring a unique chemistry to their roles, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The narrative begins when the couple move from the big city to the country for her career. A commonly used narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the conventions end. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their new home, a storm hits, and the protagonists discover an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity takes hold of the duo. This force creates a otherworldly bond between them that goes well past simple connection.

The whole movie is a methodically building fright fest, interspersing bits of dreamlike terrors, gross (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes during something horrific). The director orchestrates these parts neatly and delivers them in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is suffering due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and far away from his network of friends. He fears the idea of completely losing his individual identity in another person. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move in Together never makes one partner or the other the clear bad guy.

Tim and Millie confront the kind of problems that are inherent in long-term unions after ten years. Fundamentally, they have affection for one another. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their future together.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of codependency and fully committing to a partner, the symbolism never feels hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. On the other hand, some couples experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could function as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the finale inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your other half and say, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can embark on today.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu now.
