The Porcine Pardon: Hog Named Six Seven Granted Clemency by Miami-Dade Mayor.
It might not have been at the identical stature as pardoning Thanksgiving turkeys, but the mayor of Miami-Dade conducted a Donald Trump moment this week by ritually sparing the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. She deserves this act of mercy. She has committed zero crimes,” Levine Cava said in a speech with clear references to the sheer volume of pardons issued since the onset of a new presidential term.
“If we disregard eating six or seven apples per day,” the mayor added. “Let this swine have a lengthy and joyful existence free from concern.”
This ceremony, simultaneously observing and challenging the region’s Hispanic tradition of consuming swine during the holidays, was founded to emulate the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The animal, contributed by a Coral Gables firefighter, was christened after the current slang trend of young people shouting “six seven” – deriving from a rap song lyric – often without clear purpose. The phrase became so ubiquitous that a leading lexicon site recently named “six-seven” its annual vocabulary selection.
A Peaceful Retirement
The pardoned swine is now scheduled to spend its days at a farm sanctuary “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the event’s official press release.
“The pig pardon has become a beloved tradition to begin the festive period,” said the cafe owner, in a decidedly positive message.
“It embodies the essence of Miami: happy, varied, and rooted in traditions that foster togetherness. Each year, we are honored to observe heritage and mercy in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Participants enjoyed a plant-based fare of spinach croquetas and Cuban coffee as they marked Six Seven’s big moment.
