New York City's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to live in the iconic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the rent-stabilised apartment that was a central issue during his run for office.

An Iconic Home

Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the primary dwelling for the majority of New York City mayors from the World War II era.

Yet, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a central platform, hesitated to declare this decision right away following his electoral win in November.

"The choice rested on the security of my family and the importance of directing my complete efforts on carrying out the agenda for affordability the city's residents voted for," the Mayor-Elect declared in a statement.

A Fond Farewell

He resided in Astoria, Queens, a district renowned for its vibrant immigrant communities and culinary diversity.

"To my neighbors in Astoria: my gratitude for demonstrating what is great about New York City," he noted.

"Even though I'm moving in the neighborhood, it will continue to reside a part of me and my efforts as mayor," he affirmed.

Campaign Controversy

During his campaign, Mamdani tied his key pledge – a rent freeze – to his circumstances as a tenant.

However his opponents, most notably ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for occupying the affordable housing despite the fact that he is from a famous family.

A House Not Always Used

Not all mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, chose to live in his private home on the Upper East Side for his tenure, which wrapped up in 2012.

Rather, Bloomberg felt it ought to be a venue for civic gatherings, and pushed for significant upgrades of the historic mansion.

A Stately Residence

As he settles into Gracie Mansion for his first day on 1 January, he will experience surroundings far removed from his previous Astoria home.

With its pale yellow exterior, green shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home situated by the East River.

Internally, the lower floor of the Federal-style mansion is furnished consistent with the home's historical period.

The property, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also has enhanced security to protect the mayor and his family.

Ghostly Tales

A number of people have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.

Chirlane McCray, the partner of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that they experienced doors opening and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards made strange noises.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "It doesn't matter the skeptics say," he insisted in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."

Affordable Housing Lifeline

The apartment he is leaving is rent stabilised, meaning the city sets limits on how much landlords can increase rent each year.

Tenants see such units as valuable lifelines as the cost of housing outpaces what many can afford.

Data indicated Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Per figures from the real estate platform Zillow, the median rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
