The Details Known Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Shooting
A minimum of 16 individuals lost their lives and over 40 sustained injuries when gunmen shot at a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian police are describing as a act of terrorism.
According to the most recent information, authorities have confirmed the number of fatalities is 16, encompassing one of the alleged gunmen. Additionally, 42 wounded individuals were transported to medical facilities.
The victims have not yet been officially identified, but police believe their ages range from 10 and 87 years of age.
Below are the victims who have been identified so far.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.
Described as a father-of-five, he was the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.
“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative asked.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.
She recounted the moments before the shooting, explaining they had been standing together when the gunfire started. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.
The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having endured immense hardship in their childhood. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
The French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.
In a statement, the Foreign Minister said that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the statement continued.
One Child
A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, police have confirmed.
One Israeli Citizen
An Israeli citizen was also killed in the incident, as per reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number are still under care, with five in serious condition. Those hurt comprise two officers who responded to the attack.
One of the injured is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the gunmen. Called a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. It has been reported he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.
He wrote, he described the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He said he heard “a large number” of gunshots.
“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
