Severe Downpours Aggravate Circumstances for Displaced Palestinians in Gaza, Agencies Alert
Intense storms over the past week have intensified the precarious circumstances of the vast number of displaced civilians in the region, as reported by aid agencies.
"Terrible" Weather Brings Grave Risks
A spokesman described the recent storm as "terrible", with precipitation so heavy that as much as 15cm (6in) of water was seen on the terrain.
"These conditions was really difficult for the residents. The downpours were so intense... And the winds were so strong," stated the official.
Authorities voice significant anxiety that children sheltering in tents in soaked clothing will contract hypothermia and additional illnesses.
Fatalities and Significant Loss
Health authorities have stated that one baby has passed away from exposure and at least 11 other people have died in structural failures triggered by the severe weather.
Other reports put a greater death toll. Officials said that multiple residential buildings had collapsed completely and scores had collapsed partially.
- Roughly 55,000 families harmed by flooding.
- More than 40 designated safe spaces severely flooded.
- Countless residents required to move once more.
Assistance Distribution Seen as Insufficient
Organizations have escalated shipments of tarpaulins, blankets and clothes after the ceasefire began, but they have said there is still not enough aid reaching those in need.
"Agencies are operating tirelessly to provide that relief and to distribute it, but the scale of the requirements is so immense that we still have a great number of people and minors who are really suffering every night," cautioned one official.
Future Issues and Ceasefire Plans
The second phase of the ceasefire encompasses plans for the reconstruction of Gaza, along with political arrangements, the withdrawal of military forces, and other terms.
Aid groups have stressed the necessity for "increased and sustained relief to respond to urgent and future needs."
The war was initiated by an assault in late 2023. Later military operations have resulted in a substantial number of lives lost in the region, according to health ministry data.
