Senegal's Rising Star Camara: Starting from Aspirations to Tournament Favorites.
When I walk into the space, the young midfielder picks up a football he clings to throughout our chat. It’s a simple symbol for a dream he has never let slip. “I only wanted football; I was focused solely on that,” remarks this Monaco and Senegal playmaker.
His resolve and natural ability convinced clubs like Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. However, the most difficult person to convince was not a sporting director or coach, it was from his dad. “He didn’t want me playing soccer but it’s because he hadn’t seen me play,” explains Camara.
Overcoming Initial Obstacles
In time, on “one beautiful day,” he received his dad's approval to pursue his path in the sport. Another challenge was his small stature, which deterred local club Casa Sports from giving him a contract.
However, Génération Foot – the institution that nurtured stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. After Camara was named the MVP in a local competition, Génération Foot were “shocked” to learn he was not tied down. They acted quickly. “I was taken directly to the academy. They prevented me from going back to Casamance,” he recalled.
An Unforgettable Year and European Arrival
That decision put him on a pathway to Europe. A defining period was 2023, “an unforgettable year,” starting with him lifting the CHAN trophy. Shortly after, though tired, he competed in the U-20 Africa Cup, leading his nation to victory and earning player of the tournament.
Soon after, he was unveiled as Metz, emulating Mané. “Adapting was never a challenge,” states the 21-year-old. He has lived alone in Europe, a choice his relatives encourage to maintain his concentration.
Inspiration and Playing Style
Off-field noise are not really a problem for Camara, who looks up to Kevin De Bruyne’s “humility” and superb skills. He is also a big admirer of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His powerful shot and accuracy from set pieces are key strengths. He admits he must to control his aggression, after being sent off early in his spells at each French club. “It is a habit I carry with me!” he quips.
Life at Monaco, Teammates and Future Ambitions
With his current club, he cherishes the guidance of teammates like Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “When I heard about the interest in Pogba, I thought we are really lucky,” Camara noted.
Currently, attention is firmly on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the favourites – there's no denying it. After defeating England in their own country…,” he says, referencing a memorable 3-1 win in Nottingham.
On a potential transfer to the English top flight, he remains committed to Monaco at present. “I feel really at ease here,” he affirms. He is frequently ribbed by icon El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. He laughs, yet remains determined about targeting the main Africa Player of the Year down the line.
“We are the favourites – that's the reality. Having beaten England at Wembley… it gives you confidence.”
Looking ahead, Lamine Camara blends humble beginnings, steely determination, and big dreams as he aims to guide Senegal to continental glory and forge his own legendary path in the game.
