Manchester United Set to Sign German Striker Lea Schüller from the Bavarian Giants
Manchester United are finalising completing the signing for prolific German striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Acquisition for United
Schüller, who has half a year left on her deal, has been a consistent goalscorer for both club and country. She has netted over 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. This signing will be seen as a marquee signing for the WSL team.
Departure from Munich was expected since she was seen fighting back tears while applauding the German club’s supporters following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
It was reported in late December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its leading strikers. Per reports, all the paperwork for the transfer have now been completed.
Reliable Goalscoring to Boost the Attack
The experienced striker's arrival should represent a significant uplift to the team's forward line. Schüller has been highly reliable in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.
- For seven straight seasons, including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She claimed the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Building Momentum at Old Trafford
The acquisition of Schüller’s signature comes at a time when the club appear to be gathering momentum.
Their recent on-pitch successes include qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the mid-season window has seen further business:
- The signing of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japan playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since arriving in 2023.
On the midfielder's new deal, a club official stated: “Miyazawa is now a critical component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill allows her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”
The new defender, having arrived from a club in the NWSL, said: “You can feel how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
