Larian Studios Clarifies Its Implementation of Generative AI for Next Divinity Game
The team behind acclaimed role-playing games like Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin recently teased its next major project, generating significant hype within the player base. However, recent statements from the company's lead designer have added a new dimension to the discussion, addressing the studio's approach toward machine learning.
Augmenting Workflows, Not Cutting Jobs
In a recent clarification, the studio's founder outlined that the company is using AI technology for particular ancillary functions. These involve fleshing out PowerPoint slides, producing initial concept art, and drafting temporary text.
Notably, Vincke emphasized that the final material in the game will be crafted entirely by real writers. "We are writing every line in-house," he said.
Larian is actively expanding our roster of writers and are actively putting together writing teams.
Given that concept art is being specifically mentioned — we right now have over twenty visual developers and have job openings for further creatives.
Everything we do is supplementary and focused on having people spend greater focus on making content.
Every ML tool used well is additive to a creative team process, not a replacement for their craft.
Tempering Reactions with Clear Intent
The news of AI usage initially provoked backlash among portions of the fanbase. In reaction, Vincke issued additional detail on social media.
"Our team utilizes machine learning to research ideas, just like we use Google and art books," he explained. "During the conceptual ideation stages we use it as a simple sketch for structure which we then substitute with hand-crafted artwork."
He added, "Larian brings on talent for their inherent skill, not for their capacity to replicate what a algorithm proposes."
Focused Uses for Machine Learning
Vincke had previously broken down the company's focused method to machine learning, categorizing its use into three main areas:
- Handling Monotonous Jobs: This includes refining animations, audio processing, and Larian-specific work like retargeting animations.
- Accelerated Iteration: Using tools to rapidly prototype basic versions of gameplay ideas to experiment with concepts prior to complete production.
- Future Potential for Gameplay: Investigating how AI could in the future create new forms of player agency, particularly in creating unforeseen permutations in a complex RPG.
He specifically stated that core creative domains — such as visual art — are are absolutely not fields where the studio is cutting artistic input. On the contrary, Larian is expanding its staff in these precise roles.
"Our studio is neither releasing a game with machine-made assets, and we are certainly not looking at cutting creatives to swap them out with AI," Vincke stated definitively.
