No major competition markets competitive balance like the NFL: it defines their identity. However, after the first ten matchups of this season, this is not a competition featuring uniform distribution between the good, the bad and the mediocre. Within the National Football Conference, at least, there is some clarity. Detroit as well (six and three), with their fluctuating form on offense and defense while managing internal staff conflicts, have demonstrated they can hammer good teams. Regarding these five teams, one can readily envision a route to the final game.

Muddled AFC Picture

In the AFC however, the playoff picture remains completely chaotic. Your four division leaders at this stage: the Colts, Patriots, Broncos (all standing at eight wins) and Steelers (5-4 record). Colts Situation

First, examining Indianapolis, Daniel Jones hasn't descended to total collapse. Yet the past two games have been worrying. He has returned to turning over the ball and failing against blitzes. But Jones returning to his previous error-filled form would finish championship hopes.

New England Analysis

New England appears somewhat similar. Last season, they were a punchline. Now, they’re the NFL's most pleasant shock and the hottest team in the NFL following seven consecutive victories. If not for losing due to fumbles a manageable matchup against Pittsburgh, they'd possess nine wins, one loss with the best record. In the prior year, they seemed veteran and plodding. Currently they're inexperienced, speedy and bold. Still, it’s hard to ignore how soft the Patriots’ schedule has been. They've played against the least challenging lineup in the league, and there have still been cracks. The signal-caller has been brought down on 35 occasions – the second-most in football – and some of the shots he suffered last weekend were vicious. As the season progresses, those beatings accumulate.

Denver Broncos

The Broncos hold 8–2 as well, and it still feels like they're nervously waiting. The Denver signal-caller has been erratic, and the offense plodding, as the defense handles the majority of the work. Without serviceable quarterback play, the Broncos won't frighten anyone in the postseason. The Chargers are also contending within their division with seven wins, but the injuries within their blocking corps will present challenges for extended playoff success.

Pittsburgh Steelers

And then there’s Pittsburgh, inexplicably frontrunning their division even after suffering 25-10 by the Chargers during prime time. Their scoring margin remains negative, their defense regularly vanishes, with their quarterback's restrictions during his career phase persistently appear. They maintain a 5-4 record while surviving, but Baltimore, with Lamar Jackson healthy again and the schedule softening, are riding a three-game streak. We shouldn't be completely astonished that Baltimore has closed the gap to just one game, though the speed of this shift is an indictment of Pittsburgh's fluctuating form. That the Ravens started with a 1-5 record yet still appear likely to claim the title reveals much about the conference as a whole.

Established Contenders

Baltimore constitutes part within a trio of powerhouses – alongside the Bills and Chiefs – powered by their MVP quarterbacks, that would continue to generate the greatest concern among competitors should they reach postseason. They’re the No One Wants To See ‘Em teams, yet Kansas City and Buffalo persistently undermine themselves.

Bills Struggles

Previously, the Bills felt confident following victory over Kansas City. During Sunday's action they experienced a particularly discouraging setback this year. They didn’t just lose against Miami; they were embarrassed, falling 30-13 on the road. It was Miami’s first win against Buffalo in over three years.
