Former British Soldier Charged of Killing Kenya Female Appears in Courtroom

A man has appeared in court as extradition proceedings began in the case of Agnes Wanjiru, a Kenyan national, a woman of Kenyan origin who was murdered near a British forces camp in 2012.

Purkiss, 38, who is hailing from Greater Manchester, showed up in the magistrates' court in Westminster on Friday, and stated to the court he would challenge the extradition request. Sources suggest that he was arrested on Thursday evening.

An arrest warrant for the defendant was authorized by a Nairobi court in September. Legal prosecutors stated before the Kenyan court that the individual had been charged with a one count, of murder, and that the Kenyan authorities would pursue his extradition to face charges.

Purkiss was once employed as a medic with the Lancaster Regiment, the army unit for the northwestern England, including on deployments in Afghanistan.

The victim, 21 years old, a hair stylist who had a young daughter, disappeared after a evening out, and her corpse was discovered after two months in the area of the lodging where she had last been seen.

Nobody had previously been detained or accused in relation to her passing. The arrest of Purkiss followed a recent detective probe, which was initiated after a report in 2021 by a weekly publication, in which the newspaper approached several active and retired troops in the unit.

The investigation has been led by Kenyan detectives, which, under a bilateral security treaty, holds legal authority in the legal case.
