Astronaut Reveals Mental Health Struggle Following Deluge of Harassment After Historic Trip
A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her battle with depression after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the wake of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight earlier this year, which also included high-profile passengers.
The much-publicized journey was met with derision by some, who questioned its cost and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who became the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response overshadowed her achievement under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a online statement, describing a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the landing.
She characterized the news reports and online discourse as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.
“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she wrote. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and performed experiments during the flight, said every professional achievement – including her lab work and years of training to the symbolic importance of her heritage – was overshadowed under the tide of sexist vitriol.
She is widely recognized for her groundbreaking advocacy fighting for justice for survivors of assault.
Her own goal of reaching space was put on hold after an attack during her university years, leading to a long campaign for accountability.
A Path to Recovery
Months following reaching space, she has stated the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the supporters whose messages of encouragement pulled her through. “You all saved me,” she wrote.
She noted that despite the negativity, important benefits had resulted from the flight, such as elevated attention for her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.
The Historic Journey
The self-operating spacecraft departed its launch site in the spring, carrying the all-female team on a brief suborbital flight that exceeded the Kármán line of outer space.
The group of women also included accomplished professionals from multiple disciplines.
The company behind the flight is a private space firm founded by a Amazon founder.
